| David Lawrence Center owns and operates 24 affordable housing units for qualified, individuals with a diagnosed mental illness in Collier County at two locations (Housing Alternatives of SWFL in Golden Gate Estates and Collier Housing Alternatives in East Naples). An onsite manager and emergency contact services are provided. These residences are made possible through funding from Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the disabled population.

- Annual income can not exceed the “very low income” rate as set by the HUD Income Guidelines
- Must be willing and able to pay the portion of rent calculated using HUD rules. Rent is based on the applicant’s income therefore rent will vary by individual. Rent is calculated at 30% of income. Utility costs may also be required to be paid for by the tenant.
- Unit must be the only residence of the applicant
- Must provide a valid social security number
- Must meet the document requirements of citizenship or eligible immigration status
- Must be able to comply with all rules and regulations of the property
- Individuals must be mentally alert and able to evacuate the home without assistance in case of an emergency
- Individuals must be able to prepare meals, although they can seek help with obtaining meals on wheels, frozen dinners, etc.
- Individuals must be capable of cleaning the living unit and safely use facilities such as kitchen range, tub/shower
- Individuals must be able to take care of finances, arrange for shopping and other basic needs within the community
- Individuals must be able to tend to personal needs and maintain appropriate grooming and sanitary habits
- Individuals must be medically stabilized, as there are no medical providers on site.
How are people admitted to Collier Housing Alternatives or Housing Alternatives of SW FL?
Both housing projects are HUD subsidized Section 811 properties. All residents must meet the mental health disability and very low income requirements as described in the tenant selection plan. A copy of tenant selection plan is available upon request. Applicants will be placed on a wait list and contacted once a unit becomes available.
Can I come and take a tour of the properties?
When it has been determined that you meet the requirements in the tenant selection plan and are in need affordable housing such as Collier Housing Alternatives or Housing Alternatives, we invite you to contact the office for more information. We do not give out the addresses of the homes out of respect for individual’s right to privacy.
What does it cost to live in Housing?
Rent is based on the applicant’s income so it will vary, however rent is calculated at 30% of income.
Will I be required to have a roommate?
Collier Housing Alternatives and Housing Alternatives of SW Fl are shared living arrangements. Bedrooms are private but kitchen and living areas are shared. Some bathrooms are private while others are shared.
Where are the Housing Programs located?
Both projects are located in Collier County.
