In the early 1980’s, the Collier County Mental Health Clinic changed its name to the David Lawrence Center for Mental Health, Inc. in honor of significant donor’s Doug and Mercy Bathey’s son, David Lawrence Bathey, who died due to substance abuse and mental health issues.

By 1985, the construction of the new main campus on Golden Gate Parkway was complete and the Clinic was serving more than 3,000 people each year. On this campus, the Clinic now housed an inpatient crisis stabilization unit and Baker Act Receiving facility, an outpatient counseling center and Crossroads, a 16-bed residential substance abuse rehabilitation facility.

To meet the increasing demand for mental health and substance abuse needs in the rural farming community of Immokalee, the Center constructed a satellite location originally called, The Pines, in 1986 on land that was donated by Collier County. The adult 12-bed substance abuse residential treatment program that was operated out of trailers was shut down and moved to the Pines. This satellite location also offered, for the first time in the town’s history, bilingual assessments, crisis counseling, individual, marriage and family counseling, outpatient alcohol and drug abuse counseling and intervention services.

In 1987, the Banyon Pavilion was constructed on the Golden Gate Parkway main campus. Banyon Pavilion was a12-bed residential substance abuse treatment program serving children ages 13-18.

In 1988, the Center expanded court referred treatment and intervention programs to help offer an alternative to incarceration for individuals with drug and alcohol related arrests. A satellite location for court referred substance abuse treatment, intervention and education programs was constructed and opened on Horseshoe Drive.

In 1989, David Lawrence Center first became accredited by the Joint Commission of Health Care Organizations.

In 1989, Child’s Path Preschool acquired its own location on Santa Barbara Boulevard and the services were opened to the public as well as for Center employees.
